my dear friend the smoothie

I’ve had lots of you all recently ask what is in my smoothie. As much as I enjoy posting the recipe frequently in the comments on Instagram, I thought I’d just show you here. So I’d have a link to send people to.

And it is usually a little greener than this. I’m not sure what is going on.

I’ve found that blending it in three different batches helps me get the consistency I like.

First, I start with almost a cup of milk (I eyeball it from the measurement on the cup), a big handful of spinach, and about a tablespoon of slivered almonds.

I blend this like mad until it is completely smooth. I don’t want any spinach leaves in my teeth.

Then I add 2 scoops of protein powder and a packet of Via. And blend again.

Finally, in goes the frozen banana.

I blend it just long enough to get the banana mixed in. I don’t know how to explain it, but the color changes starting at the bottom and then goes all the way to the top. As soon as the color is uniform, I stop.

On days that I’m home, I am a rebel and drink out of a straw. But if I’m leaving the house, the lid is non-negotiable.

Oh, and because Hershel was so stinking cute while I was taking these pictures, you get a cat picture today too. She is just hilarious.

I’m thinking I need to try avocado in a smoothie, but I don’t know if I’m that brave. Anyone tried it?



  1. I’ve been making smoothies forever, and have just recently discovered the “batch” approach… I always blend my spinach with water first, then add protein and banana. Works like a charm and is sooooo much smoother.

    Such a simple concept, but I’m not quite sure why it took me this long to figure it out!

  2. Hey! I love smoothies too, but sometimes in the winter, they make me too cold. Have you every tried mixing in a scoop of your protein powder into plain (cooked with water) oatmeal? It’s yummy! When you use chocolate it tastes a bit like a no-bake cookie, esp if you add a little PB2. Or, I’ll add a dash of cinnamon. Kale probably would NOT be a good addition 😉 Vanilla powder is good too.

    • I am a daily cold coffee drinker, so I going mind this at all.

      I hadn’t thought of oatmeal + protein powder, but I will now! I have this issue with oatmeal. Sometimes I love it and sometimes it is just gross to me. I have the same issue with salmon. Sometimes it is delicious and sometimes it turns my stomach. Exact recipe has different results. I’m just bizarre. And that’s okay!
